EDL: Why I am studying Spanish

In Friday’s assembly, James T commented on his reasons for studying Spanish. Read on to find out what he had to say.
To begin, I’d like to ask a few questions. How many of you haven’t heard of Fernando Torres? … Ok, not many, what about Rafael Nadal? I’m sure all the female teachers will have heard of him… Only one person left, what about Alberto Contador? Final question, can somebody tell me what country all these men are from?
You’re all intelligent boys so I’m sure you all know that the aforementioned sports men are in fact all from Spain. Indeed this is one of the main reasons I chose to continue learning Spanish in the 6th form; the opportunity to not only learn more about sport within Spanish culture but also to be able to understand the commentary a bit better when watching Spanish sporting events on TV.
Fernando Torres is one of the best footballers in the premiership at the minute; Rafael the man who everyone, excluding ardent patriots, says is the only real challenger to Roger Federer; whilst Alberto Contador is the 2009 winner of the Tour de France. Not only does Spain have these jewels in its sporting crown but can also lay claim to world beaters in golf, formula 1, athletics and even triathlon, as well as being the country where phenomenal football teams such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Valencia entertain millions.
