Tip of the Week: Vocabulary Learning
Posted on 19. Nov, 2009 by Mrs Moorhouse in Deutsch, Español, Français, Languages

One of the best ways to significantly improve your grasp of a foreign language at any stage of learning is to increase your vocabulary. I would encourage you to keep your vocabulary books up to date (write down every new word and phrase)!
There are a couple of programs to download to aid this learning process – the idea is to enter lists of vocabulary in both a foreign language and English and then be tested on a few of them each day. You can choose to enter your own vocabulary that you have written down in class or during homework as well as downloading various lists available online which are specific to different topic areas. These programs are designed not only to help you commit your vocabulary to memory – they are also like a game! Whoever thought vocab learning could be fun?!
The programs are both free to download and use. Click on the link and follow the instructions.
ProVoc – This is designed for Mac users.
Interlex – This is designed for Windows users.
For A Level and more advanced vocabulary, these three books are absolutely great:
Wort für Wort: A New Advanced German Vocabulary
Palabra por palabra: A New Advanced Spanish Vocabulary
Mot à mot: A New Advanced French Vocabulary
If you struggle with verbs and conjugation, the following three books are highly recommended. Each verb also features a section on idioms and phrases commonly used with the verb.
Happy learning!

Palabra Por Palabra is a literary masterpiece. If you can’t say that in Spanish, buy it.
