Málaga 2010

The October half term trip to Málaga involved forty Year 10 and Year 11 students. Thanks go to Mr Allerton, Mr Winter, Mrs Turner and Mrs Gunther for coordinating and running the 4-day break. Below, Callum G recounts his story of the trip.
The 2010 Spanish trip to Andalucía began with a mixture of about forty boys from Year 10/11 heading off to a very welcoming and warm sunny Spain. After a short coach journey from Málaga to Córdoba we arrived at our accommodation: the comfortable and well placed Hostel Añil.
After settling in at our new lodgings the group proceeded to take a night-time walk of the historical centre of Córdoba which I soon discovered was full of character and charm. The following morning we headed out to see the main tourist attraction of the city, this being the famous Moorish Mosque with a cathedral built inside it (the Mezquita). Upon entering the mosque I, and certainly others, were astounded with the vastness of the building which could hold thousands of worshippers. This experience was made all the better by a guide speaking in easy-to-understand Spanish which was of great benefit to the tour as it meant I could fully appreciate this magnificent building.
After that the group walked across Córdoba to a nearby shopping centre that must have made a good deal of money out of British tourists buying headphones. Upon leaving the shopping centre we then played an interesting game of football in which I discovered a new striking talent by the name of Mr Winter. That evening the group enjoyed an authentic Spanish meal even though the gazpacho was not well received, this meal did however give me the opportunity to practice the most common of Spanish meal-time phrases, “Cola, por favor.”
The following day we visited some Moorish ruins, Madinat al Zahra, which provided an intriguing insight into the lives of the previous Andalusian inhabitants. We then went to the historic Almodóvar Castle which gave fantastic views of Andalucía. After this group the headed back to Córdoba for free time which gave me the chance to learn a great deal more Spanish and try some more traditional Spanish cuisine, this time being tapas, patatas bravas (potatoes in spicy sauce) and calamari.
On the final day we took the coach back to Málaga beginning with a tour bus taking us around most of Málaga and ending in the Gibralfaro Castle which gave us incredible views of Málaga, including the Costa del Sol. Our last day in Spain then ended with free time and a train back to Málaga airport.
For anyone wishing to go on the Spanish trip I would heartily recommend it and would guarantee that you would learn more Spanish and more importantly, have a lot of fun.
