Summer Holiday Films at Broadway

Aside from this week’s big blockbuster release, Broadway Cinema has a few foreign films on during the first few weeks of our summer holiday. Language Ambassadors – could this be the perfect opportunity to use your prize tickets?!
The Round-Up (in French, La Rafle) Friday 15th – Thursday 21st July
“The Round-Up depicts the harrowing true story of how French police, at the behest of Hitler and the Vichy regime, rounded up civilian Jews living in Paris in order to deport them to the extermination camps in the East. Starting on July 16, 1942, the French collaborators gathered and deported 13,000 Jews, among them 4,000 children. With a meticulously constructed script based on extensive research and first-hand accounts, writer/director Rose Bosch brings to the screen one of the most moving dramas you’ll see this year.”
Raise Ravens (in Spanish, Cría cuervos) Friday 15th – Thursday 21st July
“A subtle yet unmistakable indictment of the family as a repressive force in Spanish society, Raise Ravens centres on an eight-year-old orphan who believes herself to have poisoned her cold, authoritarian father, a high-ranking military man whom she blames for the death of her adored mother. Looking forward to Pan’s Labyrinth, it’s one of cinema’s most hauntingly vivid depictions of a child’s fantasy-imbued reality.”
The Princess of Montpensier (in French, La princesse de Montpensier) Monday 11th – Thursday 21st July
“Bertrand Tavernier returns to a favourite terrain, the French historical drama, in a superbly mounted 16th-century story of politics, passion and swordplay, based on a story by Madame de Lafayette. Noblewoman Marie loves her swashbuckling cousin Henri de Guise but must yield to her father’s political ambitions and marry Philippe de Montpensier. When war calls him away, her husband leaves her in the benevolent charge of tutor Chabannes, a nobleman outlawed after he turns his back on war. But Marie is soon exposed to the political intrigues of court.”
The Big Picture (in French, L’homme qui voulait vivre sa vie) Friday 22nd – Sunday 31st July
“Adapting Douglas Kennedy’s acclaimed novel – and retaining all its insight and tantalizing suspense – Eric Lartigau guides hot French star Roman Duris (Heartbreaker) to one of his best-ever performances. At once a portrait of a conflicted man and a sleek European thriller, The Big Picture counts as high-quality French entertainment – an escapist delight with substance.”
